A waffle is a batter-based or dough-based cake cooked in a waffle iron patterned to give a characteristic size, shape and surface impression. There are many variations based on the type of iron and recipe used, with over a dozen regional varieties in Belgium alone.

The word “waffle” first appears in the English language in 1725. Depending on the context of the use of ‘’wafla’’, the Frankish etymological root, means either a honeycomb or cake.

Alternate spellings throughout contemporary and medieval Europe include wafre, wafer, wâfel, waufre, gaufre, goffre, gauffre, wafe, waffel, wåfe, wāfel, wafe, vaffel, and våffla.

Waffles can be eaten plain or sprinkled with powdered sugar. They may be eaten with various toppings such as butter, chocolate chips, fruit, bananas, blueberries, boysenberries, raspberries, blackberries, strawberries, honey, jam or jelly, chocolate spread, peanut butter, maple syrup, chocolate syrup, flavored syrups or whipped cream.

Ice cream cones are also a type of waffles or wafers. Waffles with ice cream cones are the favorite desserts of the European food activists. The other classical type is a waffle with cheese and kiwifruit as toppings.
