A sandwich is a food item, consisting of two (or more) slices of bread with one (or more) fillings between them. Sandwiches are a widely popular lunch taken to work, school, or picnics.

They generally contain a combination of salad vegetables / meat/ cheese / sauces / savory spreads. The bread can be used plain, or it can be coated with a condiment to enhance flavor and texture. They are widely sold in restaurants and cafes.

John Montague, 4th Earl of Sandwich “invented” the sandwich. He liked to play cards and often played for hours and hours. So there was no time to eat. John Montague told his butler to make something he could eat at the gambling table. The butler put a piece of meat between two slices of bread and the “Sandwich” was created thus.

In Spain the word sandwich is borrowed from the English language. It refers to a food item made with English sandwich bread.

The verb to sandwich has the meaning to position anything between two other things of a different character, or to place different elements alternately. The noun sandwich has related meanings derived from this more general definition.

The word “butty” is often used in Northern areas of the United Kingdom as a synonym for “sandwich”. Chip butty, bacon butty, sausage butty are a few examples.

Sandwiches generally consist of a bread, a spread and a filling. In the most technical sense of the word. Bread serves primary as an edible container for the food inside, it can also provide the bulk and nutrients.

Any bread used for making a sandwich should be fresh. The bread spread serves three main purposes. It prevents the bread from becoming soggy by soaking up the filling. It adds flavor as well as moisture to the sandwich.

The popular sandwiches are of two basic types, hot sandwiches and cold sandwiches.
